Birdie binge carries South Korean Lee to top in second round of Mizuno Classic
South Korean Bo-Mee Lee remained invincible in the second round of Mizuno Classic 2012, as she fired a massive 64 to grab a solo lead.
Lee kept her head straight and shot a bogey-free score on Saturday at Kintetsu Kashikojima Country Club, Shima-s**+, Mie, Japan, making it hard for rivals to reach her.
With the help of an overall 134 in the first two rounds, Lee has put a considerable distance between her and the rest of the lineup, and she is now able to capitalise on her position in the
next and final round on Sunday.
On the other hand, Japanese Rikako Morita put up a tough fight throughout the second day as she carded a 68 to take the second position.
Having recorded an overall 138, Morita is standing four strokes behind Lee, but the next round will be more crucial for her as other players inside the top 10 will try to surge past her.
Lee kicked off her second round quite aggressively as she sank a birdie on the first hole. She then parred the next four holes and shot two straight birdies on the 6th and 7th
hole.
On the par-4 9th, she tactfully avoided a par, sinking the ball on her third putt.
On the back nine, her birdie binge did not halt as she reeled off two back-to-back birdies on the 10th and the difficult par-3 11th to further cement her position on
the leaderboard.
She posted another two consecutive birdies on the 14th and 15th.
Commentators said that the first round saw a little rough weather as strong winds whipped through the course all day, but most of the players remained unfazed by the unexpected conditions.
However, players like Jiyai Shin, who is the two-time winner of Mizuno Classic, were troubled about windy weather. Yet she launched five birdies on Friday to take an early lead.
“Not making a bogey, that’s the first thing. The next is my shot is really good, so I just have to continue that tomorrow and the next day,” the South Korean star said while speaking to the
LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour on Friday.
