hello is there anyone that knows much about birds?

i have took some birds in as they must of fell out of the nest and wouldnt of been able to defend by themselves.

one is okay but i think the other one was a runt as it was alot smaller.

well the "runt" is bigger now but his end toe has gone under the big toe (his middle toe) and is now in the middle which should be at the end. has he broken it?

i saw him lifting it up earlier and he dosnt go on the perches no more.

what can i do to help?? it might stop his development, and i think it may hurt him

please help

  2. Just leave it alone.  Wild animals are very resiliant.  There's a one-legged seagull that I frequently see that is doing just fine.

  3. I don't think its broken, its a common thing in chicks to have curled toes.  Usually they just grow out of it, but its because they have a flat surface and in the wild they'd be on perches and stones and that - if he can perch on your finger then he'll be absolutely fine.

ps. Don't take it to a vet, vets are not usually very good with wild birds.  Then again, it would be free as they are wild, but they'd probably take him to a special centre to rehabilitate wild birds

  4. You could take him to a vet, or contact the RSPB.

  5. take him to the vet.  You could try taping it to the other toe, but that doesn't sound like an easy job

  6. Well, when I was a kid, I lived on a farm. My parents raised chickens and peacocks. One day, I found a poor female peahen lying in the middle of the yard immobilized and flapping around to walk- she had broken her leg. I splinted it with a small piece of wood and some veterinary tape to keep the leg straight. She was able to walk on it, but I could tell it was painful. I made sure the piece of wood was very tight against her leg. I kept it this way until I could catch her again- several months. I finally took it off, and she was completely healed with only a small limp.

I realize it will probably be much more tedious with a small bird- try to possibly just wrap tape around his toe so it lies straight and is heavy. Since he's still growing, chances are the toe will grow straight and the extra weight will keep it from going under. The best approach would be to get proper veterinary care, but I realize it's expensive and my hen turned out just fine. I've heard of other bird owners using this method and it has a high rate of success.

You might want to Google "baby chick leg problems"- there was a box someone invented that helped to cure leg and foot problems in baby chickens. This might work for your little guy.

    Best of luck!
