  1. Bird song is normally associated with daytime birds, with only a small handful of notable exceptions. Apart from owls, our other nocturnal songsters, corncrakes, nightjars and nightingales are all migratory birds with a short and well defined song period during the spring and summer months. As well as the true nocturnal species, reed and sedge warblers among others, sing extensively during the night.

  2. I have also have heard a night singing bird the las two nights and also live in the Atlanta area.  The bird you hear is not a  nightjar (Whip-poor-will or Chuck-Will's-Widow, which sound similar and I've heard before). The bird I'm hearing doesn't consistently sing the same song.  Listen carefully over the course of 5 to 10 mins., if the song doesn't just repeat, then you have a Mocking Bird.  There is a street light across the street from our house so it makes sense.

  3. I think the bird might be the whip-poor-will. because of its nocturnal habits, the whip-poor-will is infrequently seen. Its cryptic coloring keeps it hidden during the day, too. However, its loud calling at dusk makes it well known wherever it breeds.

  4. If it is not a nightjar (which do not sound like songbirds), then it is probably a mockingbird. Mockingbirds very commonly sing in well-lit areas at night or or nights with a bright moon.
