Birmingham City boss tips Roger Johnson for England call-up
Birmingham City manager Alex McLeish says that England national team coach should consider Roger Johnson for a call-up, and claims that Scott Dann will also receive international recognition in the next few years.
Johnson continued his impressive form when he helped Birmingham to claim a 1-1 English Premier League draw against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday 27 November. Sebastien Larsson put the visitors ahead in the 19th minute, but Fulham hit back in the 53rd
minute through a header by Clint Dempsey.
However, Johnson and Dann kept the Cottagers' attackers at bay for the rest of the game and Johnson came close to grabbing a late winner for his side with a header that crashed off the crossbar.
According to The Daily Mail, McLeish said, “Scott is younger and will be under the spotlight for the next couple of years. Roger has played down the divisions for a few years and is now 27, and he doesn't want it to pass him by. He is desperate
to play for England and when you look at some of the other players who have been touted, I think Roger is definitely capable of being named in that bunch of players and easily capable of playing, even if Fabio Capello gives him just one. He will be able to
say he played for England and you could never take that away from him.”
McLeish also hailed the contributions of captain Stephen Carr since he came out of retirement to join Birmingham in February 2009. The former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United right-back helped the club gain promotion to the EPL in the 2009-10 season
and has made 69 appearances for Birmingham across all competitions.
Former Rangers manager McLeish added, “(Carr's) play has been brilliant. He has been outstanding getting up and down the line. He is a great example to anyone. He likes to play football.”
