Birmingham City manager slams 'fickle' fans
Birmingham City boss Alex McLeish has hit out the club’s fans who booed his players from the pitch after their English Premier League defeat against Everton.
While that situation is not rare for a club who have been on a poor run of form — the club have not won any of their last five games and are currently 16th in the table — Birmingham had not lost at home
in over a year before Everton’s 2-0 victory. However, McLeish has slammed the supporters who expressed their frustrations and described them as ‘fickle’, having apparently forgotten about the proud home record.
"There's no doubt there is more fickleness than ever before. We have to take it on the chin. It’s football going crazy. It’s not only here, it’s a modern trend, the knee-jerk reaction. I don't think it
was fair the fans should boo us for losing the game or indeed the performance because it wasn't a bad performance. Everton had the better of the first half, we started well second half and they scored against the run of play," he told reporters.
Birmingham’s last home defeat in the league came in September last year when they lost 2-1 to Bolton Wanderers.
More than three games since goal at home
However, it may be that the club’s fans were demonstrating their anger at McLeish’s defensive tactics which have led to club to play 289 minutes since they last scored at St Andrews in the league.
“Everton had the first half, they pinned us back a wee bit, but we defended brilliantly again, and we actually had the best chance with Cameron Jerome. We should have had a penalty but these things aren’t
going for us right now. We're disappointed to lose the proud home record but now we've got to start again. Most teams stay up in this Division by making sure their home form is good," McLeish.
Either way, bemoaning fan support by calling supporters "fickle" probably isn't going to help him earn him much popularity.
