Birmingham City to concentrate on Premier League survival after FA Cup exit
Birmingham City manager Alex Mcleish has urged his side to concentrate on keeping their place in the Barclays Premier League. The Scot’s comments come just after Birmingham’s exit from the FA Cup, which came as a result of a 3-2 defeat to Everton in the
quarter finals of the competition.
The Blues will be bitterly disappointed at the way in which their FA Cup dreams came to an end. Birmingham put up a spirited fight at the Reebok Stadium, giving the high-flying Bolton Wanderers a real run for their money. However, it seems that they were
not destined to repeat their Carling Cup heroics.
A last-minute strike from Bolton’s http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lee-c21860 Chung-Yung ended Birmingham’s hopes of progressing to the semi-finals, as the match at the Reebok ended 3-2 in favour the Trotters.
Alex Mcleish expressed his disappointment at being knocked out of the tournament but he refused to blame his players for the defeat. The Scot praised his side for their never-say-die attitude. Mcleish said, “We definitely wanted to win here. You could see
from that performance that the players were trying to make history a second time and get to Wembley again. It wasn’t to be, it was a tough Bolton side. They had just about their best team so that was a magnificent effort by our lads.”
Now that the club is out of the FA Cup, Alex Mcleish has set his sights on securing Birmingham’s place in the Barclays Premier League next season. The Scot is aiming to lead his side further up the League standings in the hopes of ending any lingering thoughts
of relegation.
The Blues boss added, “We’re now concentrating on getting further up the league.”
Birmingham City are currently in 17th place in the Premier League table with 31 points. The Blues are just four points ahead of bottom placed Wigan Athletic. With a total of seven teams trying to avoid relegation this season, Alex Mcleish has his work cut
out for him if he wants to lead Birmingham to their third consecutive season in the top flight of British football.
