Question:

Birth Defects reported?

Hi all,

Well, I've just heard about the 2 headed boy born in Bangladesh and am amazed that such "defects" (don't like saying that word at all) are still being recorded in this day and age.

I'd like to know why it is that most of these (such as the girl born with many legs) and similar anomolies are from countries such as India?

I cringe at the thought of suggesting that these cases are solely from third world countries but it seems to be that way.

Is it due to malnutrition of the mother during pregnancy? Poor water quality? Poor medical care and lack of screening before birth? Genetic? Pollution?

I don't like to point the finger and generalise but I'm confused as to why it only happens in such countries.

Any help would be appreciated.

:-)

  1. Though you might take ultrasound scans for granted, in much of the world such things are unknown or only for the elite. So there'd be no suggestion of an abortion.

Also, I feel that any such birth would be covered up in the western world under the blanket title of "still born".

  2. it not only happens in those countries, it happens in your country too, only difference is in your country they either abort such fetuses.

  3. It might be because in countries such as Australia, US and UK pregnancies are monitored from early on, which might pick up such 'defects'

  4. As well as the reasons given above it is also down to inbreeding and lack of education.

'Keeping it in the family' produces defects
