Question:

Birth control: IUD? Age? ?

My girlfriend is 17 years old and will be 18 in a few months. She has her first gyno appointment and is hoping to get the IUD that same day, is there any reason why the doctor would refuse to insert it that day? (besides postponing it to a later appointment after her pap test)

  1. They might wait til she's on her period, because the cervix is softer when a girl is mentruating. This will ease a lot of possible pain/cramping.

I just had my Mirena IUD inserted, & was on the first day of my period. It was like severe cramping! I mean bad cramps too.... I can only imagine how bad it would've been if I wasn't on my period.

Just a little heads up. Cuz it's no picnic, especially since I never had any pregnancies either.

Also, take an IB profin before you go. I was severely cramping, I mean hardcore, driving all the way back home until the med kicked in.

  2. Most of the time, they will insert it when women are on their period, because it is less painful.

  3. IUD's/IUC's are usually meant for women that  have had  children already.  Sometimes the doctor will approve for women who aren't mothers, in certain situations.  In most cases they just can't get the devise past their cervix in order to place  it properly.

The doc will have to do a PAP test first and get the results back from that.  They prefer to place the IUD during the womans period, so she would have to go back then to get it, IF the doc approves her for it.  Honestly, they will probably suggest another method for her.

I wish you luck!  Thank you for being careful!  ;)

  4. Not really, depends on the doctor - some prefer to install IUDs only in women who have had children, some are more enlightened!

I think it's likely that the doc would at least postpone it til the smear results are back though.
