  1. Yes you should ask about birth control at you 6 week visit.  If you are intending to nurse your options are limited.  The Dr. will go over the options.  I was told I could use the mini-pill, dep (the shot) or a device that would have been inserted in my arm (Implanon).  My insurance only covers the mini-pill so that is what I am on.

The only side effect I have experienced is I do not have any periods.

  2. You should be asking your OBGYN this question.  There are only a few hormonal things that you can use if you are planning on breastfeeding.  Mirena is one and one of the pills, I'm not sure which one.  Be careful with the pills though as they can decrease your milk supply so they should be used only if your milk supply has been esatblished.

  3. My doctor and I discussed contraceptives before I even gave birth so that I knew which one to choose when the time came.  At my 6 week post baby exam, I chose to go with a 5 year IUC which is a tiny plastic t-shaped device that the doctor implants right into your uterus.  You don't have to remember to take any pill or change a ring its just in there and you don't have to worry about it until 5 years later.  And as for taking pills while nursing it is best to check with your doctor because he/she will know if the pills are secreted through breast milk or not.

  4. Yes at the 6 week appt. They will ask you about birth control if you want to use any or not. And then they will go over all the options you have and the procedures that some with have. The only ones I know of that can be done by you are, The pill.the patch the women condom(:P) and the diaphragms. Others are insurted or givin by shot by the DR.

The affects that I know of with the pill, is weight gain and sometimes moodiness(only at first cus the extra hormones)
