Question:

Birth control pills and blood sugar...?

I'm 18 and want to start taking birth control but I'm afraid that it's going to make my blood sugar go crazy. I'm severely reactive hypoglycemic and I'd like to know if birth control is going to give me more highs or lows. Has anyone else had problems with their blood sugar after starting birth control? I am going to talk to my doctor but I'd like personal experiance from anyone diabetic or hypoglycemic who has been on birth control. Thanks:)

  1. My girlfriend takes birth control and she is a diabetic. It does not effect her blood sugars at all. but i definitely think you should talk to a doctor about it to be extra sure.

  2. I'm not sure but I think some hormones can effect blood sugar.

There are many types of BC today and some have very low doses so talk to your Doctor then see a gynecologist. They will know what if any BC you can go on,  just make sure you tell him/her that you are hypoglycemic.

  3. I've been taking the pill for about 6 years now and I cant say its ever affected my sugars!!  The only thing I've heard is that sometimes whatever brand you take can send your hormones a bit nutty!  I know a few girls that have had to change their pill!  That didn'tt happen to me, but that might have an affect on your sugars??

But your doc will be able to answer all your questions anyways!
