  1. There's nothing to be scared about regarding birth control pills. They're quite safe. Your boyfriend can certainly come in with you when you see the doctor.

What the birth control pill does is: it contains artificial forms of estrogen and progesterone. When these become present in your body, it signals your glands that it doesn't need to make these hormones  because it already has enough. This means that your ovary becomes dormant, waiting until your hormones are low enough that it should start working again. Meanwhile, the artificial progesterone and estrogen cause your uterine lining to build up. After three weeks of taking the pill, you stop taking it for one week (or you take a "placebo" pill that has no active ingredients in it). This causes your uterine lining to shed, which is like having a period, but it's induced by the pill, not by your own cycle. Because the pill's hormones are taking over your system from your ovaries, and ensuring you have adequate hormones, you will start having periods every month, and that's how it helps your period.

As for the appointment itself: the doctor will probably do a vaginal exam, and also a blood test to see what your hormones are doing.

  2. In the UK the Brook advisory clinic would see you both, and you would get what you need free of charge.I'm unsure where you live. But there must be family planning clinics near you.

  3. Your boyfriend could go with you. Just go to the doc appointment together.

I highly recommend birth control pills. I have been on them for several years now and never had a problem. They help to regulate your period and lessen the pain of cramps. Some also will help clear up your skin!

  4. As far as them letting him in the room that would be something you would have to ask at your local clinic. They will give you a pregnancy test there just to be sure your not pregnant before you can start birth control. I always had irregular periods and being on the pill does help them because it will let you know in the week you are going to have your period. the hormones in the birth control pills help that and they will tell you when to start taking them. you should also know do not have unprotected s*x until you are on the pill for a month and you can't skip pills. It takes a month for them to protect against pregnancy and if you skip a pill you increase your chances of getting pregnant. Since you are already sexually active they may want to do an exam which can feel kinda weird but it won't hurt and needs to be done to protect you from diseases. As far as just going in for birth control they will ask you questions and like I said give you the pregnancy test. they will go over different kinds of birth control. I also just preferred the pill especially to help with your periods. Just relax and it's not all that scary.
