what theme would fit a 10 year old turning 11 and an 8 yr old turning 9 would pony rides and a petting zoo be good. why or why not?

Ask your kids what they want. All kids are in to different things-not every 10 year old likes Hannah Montana if they like ponies then a pony ride is perfect. It sounds like you have some good and it's nice you care so much about making your kids happy. Happy birthday to your kids.

Those are good ideas for the younger girl.  I agree that Hannah Montana is a good theme.  I have heard of dress up parties where girls get to dress up in cute outfits, accessories, do their hair and make-up, etc.  they seem to be popular but I am not sure whether it sends the right message.  High School Musical is also popular.  I have heard of girls having soccer themed parties too.  A lot of it depends on what your girls like.  More than likely, if they like something, their friends like it too.
