something special, doesn't have to be fancy. an engraved gift may mean a lot to your boyfriend. if he collects things, buy something extraordinaire.

How about a gift certificate to a book or music store?  And take him out to eat at a nice place - it doesn't have to be expensive.  I would stay away from buying him clothes until you know him better.

Rather than a gift why not organise a surprise event? I'm fifty and personally prefer 'experiences' to gifts (unless we're talking serious jewellery!).

My boyfriend is 56  today and I bought him a PSP (Playstation Portable). He is chuffed to bits :-). For his first birthday when we were together I got him a pendant with "With Love Forever" engraved on the back, and for his birthday last year I got him a dragon water fountain, he collects dragons.
