Question:

Birthday Cake Etiquette?

Some friends and I are having a decent sized gathering to celebrate 2 friends' birthdays, and I'm making the cake. When I write the Happy Birthday -- & --, which order do I put their names in? K's birthday is Tuesday, but she is 2 years younger, and M's birthday is on Saturday, but is older. Do I go based on their birth date, or do I go based on who is older? Or is there no real protocol for this?

  1. I would do friend K first for two reasons.

    1. Her name is first alphabetically (K before M)

    2. Her birthday is first by date (even if not by year).

If anyone asks WHY one name is before the other, the easiest and most political answer is "alphabetical order."

I hope you have a great party!

  2. make two. one for each

    personalize each one

    they will feel more special

and it will only cost 5 dollars more

  3. Do alphabetical order

  4. No protocol. Do what ever looks nicest. Cut two slices for the birthday people and present both at the same time.

  5. or just put happy birthday to you both  that way no name is first but as they are sharing the occasion anyway

  6. I don't think there is a real answer here, but personally I'd do it by date...Therefore K & M...

  7. Actually, it should go according to the birth date. The Tuesday birthday's name then the Saturday b-day name.

    Hope this helps!

  8. OLDER FIRST!!! The younger one wont care, but the older one might.

  9. Why not make two separate cakes?

  10. There is no protocol for the names on the cake. Their birthdays will be celebratred together so don't worry who's name is first or second. Your best idea would be to put the names in the order of which they look and sound most appealing. If they sound fine either way, then go with alphabetical order, there will be no disputing that. if you want to get really creative then put 'Happy Birthday' in the center, and put M and K's name around it in a continuous circle so that there will be no beginning or end. That way there will be no one name first. Hope this helps you. Have a good party.    :)
