  1. If he doesn't already have one, an MP3 player, theyre about $50 bucks, and load it up with songs for him.

  2. hmmm let me think.  My hubby's been deployed twice with his birthday.  I got him a solar power watch.  Casio makes them, and they are water proof.  Very good to have, and almost all soldiers wear a watch.  I made him a pillow for just a random gift.  Went to walmart and got a "filler" pillow in the arts and crafts dept.  Painted it, and decorated it.  He loves it, makes him have a little piece of home.

  3. Nothing fragile, nothing expensive, and nothing that can melt!

If he likes lifting weights, I suggest that you send him a variety of supplements. If you don't know anything about them, you can email me. I've done this before and can tell you what the good stuff is, and where to get it for cheap.

If he likes his food, packets of tuna and salmon are great, as well as sending things like microwaveable pouches of Uncle Ben's rice, microwaveable bowls, and those "just add water and heat up" noodle side dishes.

And EVERY service member NEEDS to read Catch-22 by Joseph Heller!!

  4. Cans of food, candy, movies, portable dvd player, or a calling card to call home.

  5. Buy him a good knife or multi-tool. I think the post office will allow you to ship them if they are still in the original packaging, but most the time they don't ask.

  6. For a deployed soldier, it's not a good idea to send anything small and fragile. I suggest something useful to his hobbies that isn't too delicate. I bought my husband a poker set because he taught me how to play, and he just tossed it in a trunk to bring it home. Something that shows you really know his hobbies and to remind him of home.
