Birthdays and cakes? toronto

ok so my sister's birthday is coming up and a month after that is my grandma's birthday. I want to make there birthdays very special for them so that they can remember for a long time. so for the cake i want to know a couple of bakeries in toronto, ontario that i could be able to order the cakes with any design, does anyone know any good bakeries??????

also what do people call those cakes that are covered with this sugar dough that u really can't eat but you shape it into different things in all different colors and cover up the whole cake with it and it makes the cake supper pretty?????

  1. Patisserie Cocoa makes a lot of nice cakes and mousses, though they may charge extra if you want something other then their standard cakes.

    The sugar dough that you are referring to is probably fondant.

I am a former chef and live in downtown Toronto actually, I would call around places like the first person said, Summerhill Market and other gourmet shops, the day of the small bakery has vanished pretty much, I would determine what your looking for, a fondant covered cake is something done by a place that specializes in it or wedding cakes, so there is another tip. Even search on YellowPages.ca for Cake Bakeries as your  search mode.

    Now I do know of some place in Chinatown that do a nice cake and a bit more reasonable than others, but make few calls and see what you can find, like buying a car or house get prices and compare the types of cakes and what they will do before committing to an order, even go and sample some of the cakes for an ideal of the quality and workmanship.
