The former Indian captain Bishan Sigh Bedi on Saturday became the latest person calling for the head of the incumbent Mahendra Singh Dhoni, in the wake of the Indian team’s poor performance in the ongoing tour of Australia.
In an exclusive interview with CNN-IBN, the 65-year-old former Amritsar cricketer said that the time has come for the BCCI selectors to look for a new Test captain.
“This is the job of selectors and I don’t wish to pressurise them. But personally speaking Dhoni might have his day. I think there is definitely room for a new Test captain,” said Bedi when asked if Dhoni should be sacked from the Test captaincy.
India has recently succumbed to successive Test series whitewashes away from home – eight offshore Test defeats in a row, something unprecedented in the history of contemporary Indian cricket.
Holding Dhoni responsible for the apparent rift in the Indian team in the ongoing Commonwealth Bank series in Australia, the former skipper reckoned that the things have gone out of his control hence he should be replaced.
Bedi feels the Ranchi wicketkeeper batsman has failed to maintain the harmony in the Indian camp by publically criticising senior players for their slow fielding.
“To a certain extent, the dissensions in the team in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Australia-c746 has undermined his captaincy,” said the former left-arm orthodox bowler, who played 67 Tests and 10 One Day Internationals for India.
“He (Dhoni) created it (dissension) by himself. He was the first one to speak to the media…Most definitely things have gone out of control of Dhoni and so he should be replaced,” he further added.
Bedi insisted that Dhoni should not have made those negative comments in the media. He held the vice-captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/V-Sehwag-c2739 equally responsible for the controversy.
The former skipper observed that Dhoni was struggling as a leader in the ongoing tour Down Under.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/India-c750 to many accolades under his captaincy. He bagged the World T20 Champ title in his first tournament as skipper in 2007
before taking the side to the top of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Test rankings in December 2009, and Last year he guided the side to their second ever world cup at home.
