Bishop Hendricken go to finals after beating La Salle 3-1: Volleyball news
Bishop Hendricken boys volleyball team was able to defeat La Salle on Wednesday and secured themselves a ticket into the final of the Rhode Island Interscholastic League Boys Volleyball Division I Championship.
The semifinal that was played at Rhode Island College went on to four long and exciting sets. The first three sets of the game were intensely contested by both Hendricken and La Salle but the fourth one was pretty one sided as Bishop dominated the proceedings.
By the time the night was out, the score board showed the following final set scores in favour of the Hawks: 25-23, 22-25, 25-23 and 25-17.
Hendricken was able to work as a team to put on a relentless attack complimented by a tough defense. The team coordination with which the Hawks played the semi-final showed the way they were able to achieve the impressive wins. However, some players require
more accolades for their efforts in the Hawks’ line up. John Kane, Ted Seufert and Brendan Baker did superbly well to help their squad get the win. Kane, who is the outside hitter, was able to make the highest number of kills for his team by posting 20, whereas
Seufert kept the score board ticking by adding 12 kills of his own. Seufert was also able to make eight blocks for the Hawks. Baker was active in the defensive department as he contributed by making 21 digs for his team.
The coach of the Hawks, Michael Harrington, did not think that his team performed up to their potential and expressed his concern in the following words:  “We played so average, and La Salle is a good team. They have some good players. We weren’t aggressive.
We were too passive on our side.”
On the La Salle side, Matt Jackson, the outside hitter was able to make the highest number of kills for his team at 20. Jackson also made his presence felt by adding 11 digs. Greg Gelzinis was agile all through the night and helped out by making 24 digs
for La Salle.
The first set of the game saw La Salle take the lead early on. It was some time after which Hendricken was able to step up their game and come level with their rivals and eventually win the opening set of the game at 25-23.
It was in the second set that the Hawks lost to La Salle by 25-22 and the match was brought to a tie. Unfortunately for LA Salle, the second set of the game was the only one in which La Salle was able to earn a win as the third and the fourth were bagged
by the Hawks at 25-23 and 25-17 respectively.
Next in line for the defending champions is South Kingstown, who the Hawks will be facing on Saturday afternoon in the finals to decide this year’s title holders.
