Bison City Stakes 2011 – Bear It’s Time produced a mild upset in the Canadian Triple Tiara
Luis Contreras guided three-year old chestnut filly, Bear It’s Time, to land Canada’s Triple Tiara second jewel $260,800, Bison City Stakes at Woodbine, on 3rd July, 2011.
Inglorious, who won the Woodbine Oaks, first jewel of Canada’s Triple Crown for three-year old fillies was absent among the six Canadian foaled fillies, who participated in the Bison City Stakes.
Though the runner-up at the Woodbine Oaks, Spooky Kitten started and was sent off as a 9-to-5 favourite. The 1 1/16 mile event asked questions of the three-year old filly but Bear It’s Time provided a fast race and completed the distance in 1 minute 44.72
seconds on a Poly track surface.
The Philanthropist filly has had three starts in 2011 and she won 2 out of the three. She made all her starts at the Woodbine and bagged her first win in the Lady Angela Stakes for fillies where she defeated Sinister Quill by a massive 5 ¼ lengths on 23rd
May 2011.
The three-year old chestnut filly then went on to participate in the Woodbine Oaks on 5th June, where Inglorious was the prominent winner, Bear It’s Time finished 6th, 7 ¼ lengths behind the leader.
If Bear It’s Time was considered to win the Bison City Stakes, then it was going to be a mild upset and not a shocker, because the Reade Baker trained filly has shown a lot of talent under jockey Luis Contreras.
Contreras, who has ridden the filly twice, and, out of those two starts he has been triumphant in every race he ran with Bear It’s Time. The only loss she suffered was in the Woodbine Oaks, and, at that time Luis Contreras was the mount of the winner Inglorious,
Bear It’s Time was guided by jockey Emma Jayne Wilson.
Though Emma rode the filly very well on that given day and looked pretty sharp off from the outset, she couldn’t match-up with other fillies and lost pace at a crucial time in the race.
Right from the break, the race shaped out to be an interesting one with Niigon’s Touch ridden by Tyler Pizzaro grinded it out with Spooky Kitten for a good part of the race. The battle continued till the end while Bear It’s Time observed the sit and pounce
philosophy.
Bear It’s Time kept stalking the two leaders fighting to win the race, and when the opportunity arrived, jockey Luis Contreras urged the filly to give it her all in the closing rally.
Leaving Spooky Kitten behind a surge started to take over the leader Niigon’s Touch, who had a little issue of another filly challenging her for the final spot, but Bear It’s Time had a little bit more than Spooky Kitten, and, in the end defeated Niigon’s
Touch by a head.
