BitDefender Free Edition Vs AVG8 ?

Question

A local computer engineer has told me that BitDefender Free Edition combined with Spybot Search and Destroy will give me better protection against viruses and Spyware than AVG8 combined with Spybot Search and Destroy. Can anyone verify this and let me know if it's correct. If it helps, my internet habits are pretty general. I look at all the popular sites, just like everyone else.

Bitdefender Free doesn't offer resident protection; AVG does so without wanting to criticize this guy, perhaps he should do his research.

I use either Avira Antivir and Avast with Spybot; I can see no problems with using AVG instead. If you need to scan occasionally with another tool just for a second opinion, I strongly advise using the free version of Superantispyware -
