  1. Nail-biting (onychophagia) is a common stress-relieving habit. there are also plenty of other reasons eg hunger, nervousness, it can even be inherited- sounds silly but true.

Nail-biting can cause your fingertips to be red and sore and your cuticles to bleed. This can potentially cause other diseases and infections. Nail-biting also increases your risk for infections around your nailbeds and in your mouth. Dental problems and infections of the gums can be caused by nail-biting. For example severe tooth damage which can lead to major oral problems later on in life. It occurs because as you bite your finger nails, you’re slowly griding away the outside layer of your front teeth, exposing the more sensitive interior. Though, it does take a long time for this to occur, but if you’ve had a nail biting habit for a number of years already, then it would be advisable to break that habit as soon as possible.

Long-term nail-biting can also interfere with normal nail growth and cause deformed nails.

It is not only unsightly but also makes a person looks less confident.

You can break the habit by investing in chewing gum and carry it on you at all times, this will replace your habit. Many people have also found it effective to use a bitter tasting cream on their finger nails; unfortunately this often only works short term.

here is a whole website about treatments- Good luck!

  2. PLEASE, do not bite your nails!  I had a good friend who used to bite her nails (and eat her boogers - same demon, just ickier).  She wound up with pinworms - nasty worm things that live in you stomach and then make your butt itchy.  You've got to go to the doctor to get medicine to make them come out.  YUCK!  Not worth it.  Even once getting some nastiness like that is enough not to bite your nails.  I personally used to suck my thumb (til I was 10 years old) and I stopped the habit by wearing nail polish (clear is fine) because it tastes nasty.  If you insist on biting... wash your hands OFTEN!!!

  3. Hi i have bitten my nails for 33 years. Yes they look pretty nasty but i do not suffer from any infections as i keep my hands very clean. I am not a nervous person actually i am a very confident person. It is just a habit i can't stop. I have tried every cream, potion and hardner on the market but i eventually liked the feeling of peeling the varnish off with my teeth.

I also have a lovely set of teeth which need very little attention.

I have also used false nails in the past and ended up biting them off too.

I wish i could stop biting as i am embarressed of them especially at parties and functions. i would say it is bad and the sooner the habit is broken the better.

  4. Really gross and tells the world that you have a compulsive disorder to chew on yourself. if you saw a dog gnawing on its own tail i think you would throw up in your mouth just like i would. to be honest i think its an odd coping mechanism that i've also been guilty of. i also find myself needing to smoke at stressful times. These sorts of compulsions should be recognized first by the doer, and then approached by asking what's the feeling you get right before you bite and after? Your emotional sandwich at the time if you will. Ask questions to yourself about it like a detective. Stuff like that. Also i would try to start looking at it from the perspective that nail biting is really really really BEAT!! (<translated SUPER DISGUSTING) and then look for a solution to the moment of your "emotional sandwich" (= the moment that makes you want to bite-the biting-the feeling after)--

    goodlucky grossy-pants!!!

  5. there is nothing bad with biting them. but it is just a not a very nice thing to do. some people see it to be disgusting.

  6. Start playing guitar,

then you can bite the nails on your left hand as much as you like,

it's vital a guitarist has short nails on their left (fretting) hand :]

It's un-hygenic, it's basically like sucking on dirt and basically everything else you've touched.

    Bitten fingernails look disgusting.

    :]

  7. It is a nasty habbit to get into, I did it for years.

Side effects, raw fingers, infection. you get sick easier because you are touching everything then putting the fingers in your mouth.

  8. Terrible, they look bad and not very hygienic.

Just file your nails if you don't want to cut them.

P.S. 'Bite-ing' is actually 'biting'.   *winks*

  9. well, there are tons of germs on your fingers that could be traveling into your system through your mouth, and it certainly doesn't look nice... but it's not really that bad for you. if the way your nails look bothers you and you want to stop, there are hundreds of online sites out there to help with that.

but if it doesn't bother you, then hey, there are worse ways to cope, right?

  10. disgusting  next time you put them in your mouth imagine you have just cleaned the bus station toilets with no gloves there are germs that you can pick up from any where remember what i said yukkkkkkkkkkk

the side effects will be deadly i would imagine uh
