So i ride a cross bred mare.

she is great to ride, forward but controlable, great jumper but can get a little testy.

tho on the ground she is a demon.

she loves to work for u. and if she wasnt such a angry horse i would buy her. She doesnt like the saddle being put on. i hit her on the neck when she trys to bite but i cant turn my back on her as she took a chunk out of some1s back once.

how can i stop her., she is ok with some people i have just started at this new riding center this year???

  1. if you messin' with her, and handling her in repitition isnt helping, you just have a horse with an attitude.

you just have to let her know, YOUR boss,

    she'll get the picture ( :

  2. have you ever tried getting a moose as a friend for her? I heard this can fix all the problems!

i would get back problems ruled out, get a chiropractor out and also get a dentist to check her teeth. se if you can find out her histroy and the origin of her saddle "habit".

she probably a dominant mare and needs a dominant handler, does she perform better for a larger more controlling person, or is she just a w***e all the time?

  3. i have a horse who like to bite too

cup your hand and smack him on

the neck when he tries to bite

or use cross ties when working

with him so it limits how far he can

reach . good luck i love my guy

    any way.

  4. There is little that you are likely to be able to do to immediately cure this problem. This horse has learned that this is good behavior for most of her life... The other answers sound great about putting her in cross ties, or getting her back checked out (not sure about the hot potato!) But I'd try leaving her untied, holding the end of the lead rope, and if she tries it to squirt he just once on the nose with water from a spray bottle.. Beware that she is likely to jump at the sensation, but it's MUCH kinder that either hitting her, or turning her into glue (whoever suggested that is out of their mind!!)

She looks like a beautiful horse in all otheer aspects, and as you jump so well together, it will be a shame for this one little thing to spoil that partnership..

You may also try learning to put the saddle on while you are looking forwards, and also not tightening the girth all the way up at the beginning (just put it on loosely, and wait 5 minutes and go back and tighten it a little)

She is a beautiful horse (and your browbands are awesome too) I hope this has helped, and the two of you enjoy many more years together :)

  5. I haven't ever tried it but one way of stopping a horse biting that I've heard off is to get a hot baked potatoe and strap it on to yourself where she bites (you need a reasonably predictable horse for this) under your shirt (put a towel or something under so you don't get burned) and then the idea is that the horse bites you, gets the potatoe and burns it's mouth without associating you with the pain. This should discourage the horse from biting.

However from what you say she could be in pain so you should ask the stables to have her back and her tack checked to make sure that they aren't causeing pain. If thats ok then it's possible that they have caused pain previously.

Don't hit her head as this will make her head shy and I've seen some horses who make it a game to bite and then get out your way before you can hit back. Rather than hitting at all you could 'bite' her back - use your hand to grab a load of skin on her neck and twist a bit. This resembles another horse bitin back.

  6. She needs to have her back and teeth checked! Also, the fit of the saddle must be assessed by a saddle fitter. This is a pain response, or a learned response as a result of being in pain for some time in the past. Punishing her is not the answer, she is trying to tell you something is wrong! You have to listen to her! No horse is born bad tempered, people make them that way. You need to find out why she is doing this, she shouldn't be ridden untill this problem is resolved.

  7. My gelding used to do the same thing at first. he would not even let me catch him. so for a while i would catch him with food and bring him out and just brush him. i wouldn't even ride him. then i would gave him a treat when he would be nice. now i can sometimes catch him and when i bring him out he just stands there while i put the saddle and bridle on. just reward her when she is good and punish her when  she is bad. she will figure out that being mean wont get her anywhere

  8. Since she is biting to truly do damage the hand resembling another horse biting her is a bit of a joke.  At best it shows them how soft and weak you are.  Take a horseshoe nail between your fingers.  Make it stick out just a little from between them.  As soon as she turns to bite then jab her hard.  Do not be afraid to draw a little blood, she sure isn't.  A time or two of this and she will stop trying to bite you.

The bump method with a cane in front of the nose is also unlikely to work for long with her since the habit is so ingrained.  Just use the nail.

My sister actually didn't have a nail once and used one of those little miniature pocketknives with like a one inch blade the same way on a mare that was just as mean as yours.  She put the blade between my fingers as I described and when the mare tried to take a bite out of her arm she jabbed it in the nose.  It only drew one drop of blood but that was the last time the mare bit anyone.

If you feel that this is too harsh then stop riding the horse because sooner or later she will get you hard and really hurt you.

She is OK with some people because they let her know who was boss.

I am confused by one thing.  WHAT was banned in Australia years ago?The glue making?

Anyway, this is not a pain issure with her.  She is a school horse so it became a learned behavior to treat people this way since she gets by with it with novices.

  9. uh its obvios turn her ito glue! the world cudd use more glu n less horses o wwait do they still use horses 2 make glue
