  1. my horse likes the rubber mullen mouth because he cews on it.

  2. a strong mouth horse or hard mouthed does not mean you up your bit. You need to teach your horse to be softer by bitting and flexing long-lining and ground driving. Just because your horse is not responsive, upping the bit may show some results for awhile but your horse will just get a harder mouth and go back to his old ways. the saying goes the more trained your horse is the more bit he can handle...........go back to a plain copper mouthed snaffle and do your ground work.

  3. Here is a link of English bits that you can consider...

  4. A bigger bit is never the answer.  Have you checked his teeth?  his mouth or tongue for problems?  If he has a busy mouth, he has some issues somewhere.  Why not try to address the problem instead of the symptom?  Just a different idea.

  5. Hey a different bit does not always work it could just make him mad and get bad habits, It could really help if you use a martingale and if gets strong it could be if you use a crop your ranes are to short you should try those see if they help if the do e-mail back!

  6. you could ride him in a kimberwick or in a twisted full cheeck snaffle. that helps your hors enot want to run through your aids and helps provide more leverage on your horse;s mouth to make him or her pay attention and not run right through what your trying to do with him or her and ignore you.

  7. I ride a big draft horse and he is strong and likes to play with his bit then my aunt told me to use a hackamore bit and it works wonders

  8. What style do you ride?  English or Western?  Any specific activity/discipline you do?  That will help narrow it down.

EDIT:  I would try him in a kimberwicke.  They give you a little more leverage than a snaffle which should help him to not run through the bit like he's doing.  They do make kimberwickes with rollers so I think that would be a good option.

(Kimberwickes are illegal in some types of shows so don't use this one if you plan on showing much.)

You could also try him with something that's a bit twisted to give it a little more oomph.  Or you could try a Dr. Bristol or french link mouthpiece to put a little more power behind your bit.

  9. Im not an english rider so listen to their suggestions on the bit type; my only suggestion is to have his teeth checked if you havent already.  There may be something there hurting him.

  10. A Stronger bit isnt always nessacery.

try sponging on your reins to get your pony to listen (thats little left right squeezes)

if you want to change your bit i use a happy mouth 4 ring gag on my welsh cob. its flavored so its alot nicer for them in their mouth.

i personly dont like kimblewicks and pelhams as they have a strait bar and there for can pull through thier mouth.

    anyway hope this helps x*x

  11. A bit with a curb chain would possibly help.  If you ride English then you can use a Kimberwicke, it works well for my frisky Arab cross mare.  Or if you ride western you can get a Wonder Bit,  Argentine snaffle or a number of other bits that are not too harsh by themselves and utilize leaverage on the curb chain.  Any bit can be very harsh depending on the hands holding the reins.

  12. a gag bit works really well.

use just a small amount of pressure, just barely any pressure.

if you put too much pressure on the reins, it will cut his mouth. so just a very small amount. good luck!
