Bitter taste in mouth what is it?

Everything i eat tastes bitter the past few days, just alittle. I did alittle research and some people have it coming from their stomach but it goes with bad breath, i do not have that. Also pregnant women seem to have it, i am not a woman. Anyone have any idea what this is? Only thing that was uncommon is that i had to stay awake for 20+ hours a few days ago, about when it started but i catched up on that more than enough.

  1. Have you considered "Acid Reflux" - anything can bring it on --stress, eating too much of  say 'greasy' stuff? gastritis.    It is easily cured.

The 20 hrs could definitely have messed up with your system. Especially if you didn't eat/drink healthy.  If you had lots of coffee/iced tea - caffeine?

As I don't know where you are from (USA?), I recommend you check with your local pharmacist to see what is the equivalent of prevacid (over the counter) or similar.  Take for a few days, but not more than 7.

Keep a journal - annotating eating/sleeping habits and how you feel

In bed, sleep for a few days with head/neck and chest area elevated more than usual  -  it will help with the reflux, if that is what you are going thru.

Eat healthy. Try to avoid greasy stuff for a while, like pizza (sorry)

Fruit/yoghurt/chicken (roasted not fried)/high fiber/cut back on too much butter.....just be nice to your body for a bit.

If all of the above fails and you still feel that taste in your mouth, I recommend you see a Gastro.   Take your journal with you.

Diabetes: it could but more than likely (I am not a physician) is not.  Do you have excess thirst? Do you have what is called "metalic" breath?  you can look up on WEBMD and other websites similar for the symptoms and see if they apply.   Diabetes is a silent disease and does creep up on us. If you have a friend with diabetes, ask them to test your blood before you eat, before bed, when you wake up (most of us diabetics have more than 1 monitor so I am sure they would lend to you).

    good luck

  2. Question -- are you losing weight by chance? It isn't uncommon for those losing weight rapidly (and perhaps when you were up for 20 hours your burned more energy than you consumed and got dehydrated, as well), especially on low carb diets, to get a bitter taste in the mouth as a result of KETOSIS.

If it's just the result of short term weight loss, it can be  harmless, but if its the result of diabetes, you'll want to check it out, or if not, yet it remains constant and you're not eating enough, you could be going into a starvation mode, which is as simple as burning more energy than you are consuming. Read the data, linked below.

  3.   It could be a little acid reflux going on...get some Pepcid OTC at any drugstore and take it for a few days.  It should help!

  4. I have heard of this happening to people on the Atkins diet also. Do you eat mainly proteins? Research (Atkins Diet and Bad Breath)

  5. I think you should have clicked on the tab to the right and posted this question in a medical section.

Aside from that you might have a gland infection, acid reflux or you may have eaten that weird South African Berry that rewires your taste buds.

  6. You might have a watch battery stuck between your gums and your lips... Huh? Try brushing your teeth a couple times. Maybe rinsing the battery out.

  7. are you eating enough?  sometimes a person who has not eaten healthy in a 24 hour period will get that taste.  Especially if they are diabetic.
