Bizarre foot problem?

A friend of mine has that weird looking foot problem for a couple of years now and she can't find out what it is. The soles of her feet are very dry, looks like big gray looking flakes on the surface and dark patches under the skin. sometimes when she tries to peel it. does anyone know what it is? is there any home or over the counter remedies for it.
