  1. I trained Gi in the beginning and transitioned to no gi once I got the basics down. I train for cold hard self defense and to stay in shape.

However, I still like to practice a gi choke once in awhile because if you grab enough shirt, a collar choke can be effective.

  2. I train in Submission Grappling, which is inherently no gi. I intend to compete in MMA, but I also appreciate the self-defense value of grappling. But before I even had interest in MMA, I decided to take grappling to round out my skills a bit, as I had already been training in striking for a while.

Anyways, it's ideal to practice both gi and no gi grappling, and it's important to recognize the differences. And by that I mean the differences in the game and in the skills and weaknesses that each type of training will impart upon you.

Gi JiuJitsu requires more technical defense because the clothing will negate the sweat factor. As such one can't rely on slippery to escape submissions. Also, the gi game is much slower and lends itself to slightly more intricate traps and feints.

No gi, on the other hand, will build a stronger offence because of the slipperiness. When you go for submissions you have to be quick and precise, because if you're too slow or your position is off, it will be all too easy for the opponent to slide through your grasp. Overall, the game is a lot faster than gi JiuJitsu; you learn to scramble.

While no gi is more applicable to MMA, I believe that one compliments the other and ideally, both should be practiced.

  3. train with a  gi it makes you way more technical. I train for Judo and Jiu-jitsu competitions.

  4. . I train in both , because both have their advantages. I suppose it really depends on what you want out of your training , if you want to train for a mma fight , then No gi is the best way to go , because in a mma fight, you do not have sleaves and collars to keep the guy from posturing up and throwing punches at you , so you should train for that. If you are training for traditional grappling tournaments , then I suggest the training in the Gi , because there are many Gi chokes , sweeps , and reversals you can not learn to apply or defend if you just practice with out a gi. The basics is all the same with BJJ no matter if you wear a gi or not , but there is minor differences. I personally prefer No gi , because I train mma , and think in a street fight  , people usually just wear a t-shirt when they want to fight.

  5. I train bjj at Roger Gracie's in London. I normally train with a gi, simply because I enjoy it more. No gi for me is much harder- since size, weight and strength play a much bigger role... (Compared to with a gi, being a smaller person I can be technical and can fight with much heavier folks)...

However, I think no-gi is much more effective for combat and self-defense... All my favorite 'bread-and-butter' techniques were taught to me by no-gi MMA fighters- any technique that you use with no-gi can be used with a gi...

Its good to train both and be well rounded...

BJJ is perfect for me because of a bad ankle injury...

  6. I prefer to train without a gi, but have done both.  I compete as a stand up fighter but have not competed as a grappler or MMA (yet).

I prefer to be on my feet, but I at least want to know what to do if I end up on the ground.

The reason I started training in this was because, after 22 years of stand up martial arts, I had never done any ground work and I wanted to see for myself what the big fuss was.

From a self defense standpoint, it's nice to know the locks and submissions for non-lethal force and restraint in a 1 on 1 situation, but you should never take a street fight to the ground to begin with.

  7. I train gracie jiu  jitsu under renzo gracie. i am a competition and self defense practitioner. i train with a gi, it teaches you to get over the overwhelming discomfort of fighting, it teaches you to always protect your neck, it makes you sweat and it disciplines you in keeping it clean and showering n such. also bud, don't spell it ju jistu, the gracie way is jiu jitsu. the way brazilians say it, not japanese.
