  1. Both...

    They compliment each other.

If your style is BJJ then you wear a Gi at some point of training.

Gi makes your grip stronger, lets you understand the fundamentals of control better, when you can escape a pin or submission while wearing a Gi, escaping that same pin or submission without a Gi is much easier.

There are also way more techniques that are open with a Gi, training for them allows your thought processes to be quicker, and a good understanding of flowing with submissions. It also teaches you how to defend against people using your clothing and Gi against you.

No Gi: Helps your pins and submissions, if you can submit someone who is sweaty and slippery, doing so with a Gi is much easier. If you can control a guy without having to rely on a Gi, when you have the added bonus of a Gi, controlling him is much easier. Has the added bonus of making the scramble much more important, without a Gi to utilize some controls, the scramble has a much higher priority for getting dominant position.

I could write a book on this stuff, but you get the jist.

You should train in both, as they compliment and help each other and help you have a more rounded game grappling wise.

    (edit) Chris P:

Mount is easier with a Gi, provided you aren't having to defend yourself from punches. In No Gi escape mount is easier too...in a grappling only context there aren't many submissions from mount that you don't have to give up the position, but in a fight, when you have to worry about punches.. Mount is a d**n crappy place to be.

  2. I would personally wear my gi

  3. I have indeed heard different things about this...

Some MMA guys, Diego Sanchez comes to mind, only recently started to train Gi.

From personal experience, theres certain moves that come to mind which would be very effective when wearing the gi, or clothes in general for that matter, that would be nullified if someone isnt wearing a shirt.(As in an MMA fight)

Now with that in mind, top class BJJ trainers are not going to show top fighters gi chokes and stuff concerning the gi, not that i would imagine...

But another factor is the gi slows you down...in 2 ways...

Its pretty heavy, especially judo and BJJ gi's.... and hot, so sweating and the extra weight and the gi soaked in sweat make the training a little harder, but also some chokes and transistions are MUCH slower when wearing a gi...for example, a guy with good defense maybe can fight off a rear naked when someone has hooks in, not to mention the choker in that case has to work extra hard to fish his hands through and fight through the grips...the flip side is when you try the same choke in the ring and the guys are sweating it would flow more....

good points by judo m**o - and not to undermine your question...but is this why the mount is so easy to escape with a gi on, whereas the mount in MMA is almost always a fight finisher????
