Bjorn Fratangelo stuns Joris De Loore to sail into the Boys’ Singles quarterfinal – French Open 2011
American Bjorn Fratangelo upset eleventh seeded Belgian Joris De Loore by dominating in tie-breakers of both sets on Wednesday. He registered a 7-6(1), 7-6(8) victory over the 18-year-old Belgian to advance into the quarter-finals
of the Boys’ Singles at Roland Garros 2011, where style meets substance.
Ranked 1404th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour rankings, Fratangelo took one hour and thirty-four minutes to triumph over the Belgian, ranked 162 places above him, at Stade Roland Garros.
The 17-year-old confidently made an appearance at court six and smoothly held his opening serve. He lost his serve early on but counter attacked by snatching the break back. Fratangelo then held his remaining serves to take the
set to tie-breaker where he moved the Belgian all over the court and eventually won the set with a 7-6(1) win.
He clobbered 63 percent of first serve which is much better than De Loore’s 47 percent and earned an impressive 67 percent win on it. Despite committing more double faults, Fratangelo barely sweated in the tie-breaker to clinch
the set.
The American kept his momentum into the final set and regardless of raising his level of game by producing a much higher first serve share of 70 percent as compared to Belgian’s 47 percent, he converted only one breakpoint opportunity
to his advantage. Fratangelo saved only two out of three breakpoints conceded and dragged the set to tie-breaker. He prevailed in it to pocket the set with a 7-6(8) win in fifty minutes.
Overall, the lower ranked American netted 90 points as opposed to De Loore’s 79 and hammered three ferocious aces.
He battled past Moldovan Maxim Dubarenco in three sets and trashed Canadian Filip Peliwo in straight sets to reach this spot.
Up next for the American is the fourth seeded British Oliver Golding who overpowered American Marcos Giron in a three set thriller to reach this last eight spot.
The seeded British boy thundered at court sixteen and reeled off the opener in thirty two minutes. He saved one out of three breakpoints faced but converted three out of eight breakpoint opportunities to his advantage to clinch
with a 6-3 victory.
The British boy lost his way in the second set and despite converting the only breakpoint opportunity to his advantage; he lost his serve twice to lose the set with a 3-6 defeat.
Golding raised his level of game in the decider and after converting four out of seven breakpoint opportunities to his advantage, he sealed the set with an assuring 6-2 score line in twenty-eight minutes.
