Bjorn Fratangelo toils pass Tristan Lamasine to reach the final of the Boys’ singles – French Open
Local hopes were eventually crushed when Bjorn Fratangelo of the United States defeated the French competitor, Tristan Lamasine in the semi-final of the Boys’ singles category at the French Open on Friday. The American laboured
hard for one hour and forty six minutes before he wrapped up the three-set thriller at 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, to get a place in the final of the Grand Slam tournament.
It was an evenly poised contest with both contestants exhibiting their amazing tennis skills to get the better of the other. Fratangelo drew the first blood in the contest when he secured the opener to get one up in the game. However,
Lamasine didn’t stay behind and made a major breakthrough in the very next set to level the contest with one set a piece. It all came down to the decisive third set and the French finally crumbled under pressure to bestow victory over Fratangelo to allow him
a place in the final match of the mage event.
Both boys served with over 60 per cent accuracy but six double faults on part of Lamasine proved much taxing in the end. Their first serve points winning ratio was also quite similar but Fratangelo struck three serve breaks as
compared to Lamasine’s two break points to achieve the competitive edge over his opponent.
The opening set took off with both contestants adopting aggressive approach to get the early benefit in the game. Lamasine committed a number of unforced errors in the first set to allow easy points to his opponent, letting him
to settle in the game. Two consecutive double faults from the French allowed Fratangelo his first serve break of the match and served out of the opening set at 6-4 to get the upper hand in the contest.
The American failed to sustain his momentum in the following set and a series of errant strokes from his racquet allowed Lamasine to bounce back in the game. The French suffered a serve break early in the second set but replied
with two break points to bag the set at 6-4, levelling the matchup at 1-1.
It all came down to the decisive third set and Lamasine crumbled under pressure to let the American come on top of the contest. Fratangelo stung just one serve break to seal victory at 6-3 and earned a pass to the final of Roland
Garros, where he will face the 14th seed, Dominic Thiem of Austria for the Boys’ singles title.
