Bjorn Phau, Eric Prodon through to the second round of qualifier at the Sony Ericsson Open
Bjorn Phau defeats Igor Sijsling 4-6, 6-2, 6-2
World number 113 Bjorn Phau of Germany ousted world number 162 Igor Sijsling of Netherlands in three sets 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the qualifying draw at the Sony Ericsson Open in Miami.
The German was broken once in the opening set, losing it 4-6. He hit 63 per cent of the first serves in the opening set, winning 55 per cent of the points on them. In comparison, Sijsling fired in 3 aces and a single double fault
in the first set. The Dutch delivered 71 per cent of the first serves and converted 68 per cent of them into points.
After losing the first set, Phau changed his strategy as he started playing aggressive shots. The German broke his opponent twice in the second set, winning it 6-2. He hit 52 per cent of the first serves in the second set and converted
a whopping 92 per cent of them into points.
In the deciding set, Phau again broke his opponent in the fourth and sixth games to win the set 6-2. The 31-year-old converted 2 of the 6 break points he received in the final set. The right handed saved the only break point he
faced in the third set.
The German is drawn to meet world number 146 Paul Capdeville in the second round. Capdeville defeated world number 108 Alejandro Falla of Columbia in straight sets 7-5, 7-6(5) in the first round.
Eric Prodon thrashes Carlos Salamanca 6-2, 6-0
French Eric Prodon cruised past Columbian Carlos Salamanca in straight sets 6-2, 6-0 to get through to the second round of qualifying draw of men’s singles event. The French took just 52 minutes to oust his opponent in a one-sided
contest.
Prodon broke his opponent twice in the opening set to win it 6-2. He fired in 2 aces and 67 per cent of the first serves in the opening set. The French won 86 per cent of the points on his first serve. On the other hand, his opponent
hit 86 per cent of the first serves and converted 52 per cent of them into points.
The 29-year-old completely dominated the second set. He did not allow his opponent to win even a single game in the second set, winning it 6-0. The French delivered 50 per cent of the first serves, winning 63 per cent of the points
on them. The right handed capitalized on 3 of the 4 break points he received in the second set.
The French will face Igor Kunitsyn of Russia in the second round. Kunitsyn defeated Australian Carsten Bell in straight sets 6-1, 6-1 in the first round.
