Black Caviar sustains muscle injuries after her victory in the Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot
Black Caviar’s victory in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot was no short of drama, especially when jockey Luke Nolen slowed a little in the end allowing other runners to capitalise on the mistake.
The daughter of Bel Esprit, out of mare Helsinge, did not deliver her best performance since it was the closest that she came to losing, and risking her unbeaten record, as she managed to defeat, Moonlight Cloud by a head, who was closing in at all times.
It was later declared that the horse sustained some muscle injuries, which might have affected her performance a great deal.
It was noticed that she wasn’t her usual self. This might have been due to the fact that the six-year-old mare suffered a few muscle tears, and sustained a serious tear to her quadriceps, which might have contributed to the slightly weaker performance.
The blame for her performance was placed on her rider, who later admitted that the setback during the race was his “brain failure” and had nothing to do with the horse’s brilliant effort.
The mare was taken through a thorough check-up, and nuclear scans were conducted to determine the extent of the damage.
However, trainer Peter Moody was relieved to see that injury was not that serious, and can be cured with rest and constant care.
Moody stated that: "She's had something like this before" and chances are that she will recover from it. Moody stated that the horse was "very flat and tired" after the race and will go into quarantine.
The rumours of the brown mare’s retirement were premature, and Moody stated that she will resume her racing campaign in the fall.
She will be taken to Australia now, but chances are that she might participate in the Patinack Farm Classic in November, and might even go for the Hong Kong International Sprint in December.
Regardless of her short-coming at Royal Ascot, she still excelled and has an impressive record of 22 victories out of 22 starts.
The mare still won the race, and at the end of the day that is what mattered. If she continues racing, she will add more impressive victories to her record.
