Black Eyed Peas failed to energise Super Bowl
The National Football League (NFL) brought in the Black Eyed Peas to make the Super Bowl XLV halftime show more youthful and energetic.
Well, they brought the youth but not the energy.
The Super Bowl stage is probably the biggest that the Black Eyed Peas ever performed on. Their unique style of mixing hip hop, dance and pop have made them successful throughout the entire world and there is rarely a soul that hasn’t heard of them.
However, like Will.I.am’s plastic hair hat, their performance at the $1.3 billion Cowboys Stadium was just stiff.
Even though Usher made only a brief performance in the show, he brought a zap of energy and excitement that the Black Eyed Peas had been sapping from the audience during the entire show.
The quirky quartet started the Super Bowl halftime show with a great entrance. Fergie, Will.I.am, Taboo and Apl.de.ap came in from the top of the stadium while singing their hit “I Gotta Feeling” with dancers performing on the field.
However, the Black Eyed Peas did not really look as though they had any feeling. They seemed hesitant and nervous, especially after Fergie’s microphone didn’t work until halfway through her first verse.
They also performed “Boom Boom Pow” and “Pump It” in a fine performance. And saying fine means that, technically, they did perform well. There were no faults, Fergie’s voice was excellent and their rap sequences were great. But the Super Bowl is looking for a group that can excite the audience, and the Black Eyes Peas failed to do so.
Even Slash, former guitarist from Guns ‘N Roses, came onstage to do a cameo with Fergie on “Sweet Child O’ Mine”, but seemed bored while doing so. The surprise cameo wasn’t really necessary at all, seeing as it didn’t excite or even surprise anyone.
Luckily for viewers and the NFL alike, Usher took the liberty of reviving the halftime show. He did not disappoint anyone, performing his number one hit “OMG” with Will.I.am in all white and a group of dancers. Although, he danced more than sung, his choreography brought energy back into the show.
“I gotta feeling”, that the league will be looking for a different act for Super Bowl XLVI next year.
