Question:

Black Moor goldifish?

I have two african dwarf frogs, a pleco, two recently added black moors, and two ghost shrimp. A man at the pet store told me that goldfish put too much ammonia in the water to live with anything but goldfish, is this true? And he said i have to constantly do water changed because they run out of oxygen quickly....

Any advice from owners of these fish is appreciated.

  1. if thats what the man said why did you buy them

also i thaught plecos were tropical

  2. It's true. All types of goldfish are extremely dirty and need frequent water changes. Plus all of the other fish that you have are tropical fish and need warmer water than what the goldfish need.

  3. Well, the frogs, pleco, and ghost shrimp all need a heated aquarium and the goldfish need cold water, so that won't work.

If you don't already have this filter you should get one:

I just got one for my 49 gallon tank. Its very good.

Do a 10% water change every other day. So like if you have a 20 gallon you'd change 2 gallons and if you have a 50 gallon you'd change 5 gallons.

  4. ok the man was right about keeping gold fish with gold fish but his reasion is wrong all fish produce waste period a well ballanced and cycled tank can and will handle this the problem is that gold fish and tropical fish have totly different systams gold fish being more alkine and neithers food is good for the other the other problem is gold fish prefer water temps below 70 degs where tropicals prefer water temps starting at 76 degs and the water changes for oxygen is a bunch of bs all you need is a filter that will turn the tank once to twice and hour minum i.e. in a 12 gallon tank you want a filter with a gph of 12 to 24 of more

edit:water changes more than once a week do nothing but stress your fish out I personnly don't beleive in doing water changes except every 2 weeks on tanks that haven't been set up for 6 months and once a month on tanks that have been up over 6 months except when I am promoteing fast growth in the fish and I also don't beleive in siphoning the gravel except once a month as it carries the majority or good bacteria

  5. These moors have no compatibility with the others. Either take them back and have a happy tank, or get a new tank for the moors.

  6. probably yes cuz black moore are pretty dirty so very frequint water changes. it depends how big your tank is. email me if you want and tell me how big it is and i can tell you if hes lyin or not but hes probably tellin the truth. maybe a couple of goldfish is just to much because they give of so much bacteria and odor and p**p so much so it depends how big your tank is.

  7. Golfish do produce a lot more waste than most other fish, so the person in the pet store was right. Ammonia is produced through fish p**p, as well as fish breathing.  Goldfish are well-known as very dirty fish.  However, this doesn't mean disaster for your tank.

First of all, make sure you NEVER overfeed your fish. This contributes to the ammonia, nitrate and phosphate (which means you'll have alot of algae), as well as dirty up your tank.

Secondly, you should always do a 25% water change a week to control the levels of waste in your tank. This will help oxygenate the water too.

If you're still afraid the fish will suffocate, hook up a powerhead to agitate the surface of the water. This will oxygenate the water much more efficiently than an airpump will.

The only thing I'm concerned about is that goldfish are from a different climate/environment than the other animals in your tank.  Because of this, they may transmit diseases to each other that they wouldn't normally be exposed to... not to mention the different preferences in water temperature.

My advice is to move the goldfish into a separate aquarium suited to them.

  8. Hi! I actually have two large Goldfish (one is a Black Moor) in a tank with a Pleco and a couple little Tetras as well as a Dojo Loach. Its true that Goldfish produce more waste/ammonia but as long as you have a filter on your set up (and with only two Goldfish) you will be just fine. And as long as you have a good air-stone you will have plenty of oxygen I don't know why he made a comment about that though because Goldfish are actually a very hearty fish and can live on less oxygen then many fish (I don't recommend you try it though). And those fish are totally compatible! The only thing to be prepared for is that the Pleco will get huge so if this is a small tank be ready. I have a little 3" baby Pleco in with my Goldfish but our adult Pleco is in our 155gal because he is almost a foot long. And you will notice that as the Pleco grows he will make just as much "waste" as the Goldfish, if not more. Other than that you should have no problems. Good luck with your tank! I have eight going right now and we have a lot of exotic fishes but my Black Moor is one of my favorites...his name is Hannibal. :)
