David Anthony, the game director, gave the lowdown on what gamers can expect from Treyarch’s latest instalment in the Call of Duty series and things seem to be getting interesting.
The Call of Duty is split into two distinct series; they are Infinity Ward’s Modern Warfare series and Treyarch’s World at War game and the Black Ops series.
While Modern Warfare may have sold better and has more loyalty from the fans, Treyarch is known for being more ambitious and innovative in their approach to the series, something that the studio wishes to continue with Black Ops 2, as the game’s director, Mark Anthony, went to some length to point out.
Showing off a recent demo during which the city of Los Angeles was decimated by a swarm of drones, Anthony explained exactly what was going on.
"You just saw LA - that's a fair ways into the story. At this point, LA has almost been totally destroyed as Menendez has taken control of the entire US drone force.”
Raul Menendez is the games antagonist, though Treyarch is hoping he will go on to become one of the more iconic video game villains after gamers experience Black Ops 2.
Anthony continued by explaining that China will be keeping a close eye on the US at this point and, almost to prove that point, the demo ended with half of the drones that attacked LA change direction towards China.
Anthony added, “The entire world is in complete turmoil, Menendez is in the middle of it - the main thing for me and David was breaking the player's expectation"
However that was not the end of it as the game director teased, "At this point when you finally get your head around the story, we turn the tables again. I can't tell you how, but this is the point in the story where it gets interesting.”
At the same time Anthony also pointed out that the game would focus on forming an “emotional connection” between the game’s villain and the player.
