Treyarch has responded to the woes of fans who are disappointed that the game will be built on the same engine as the original Black Ops saying that the engine has changed and been upgraded.
Fans of the Call of Duty series have been complaining about one thing increasingly over the past few years and that is the fact that the games are built on the same engine as their predecessor. The result is that every game feels and looks the same during
a time when gamers want something new and fresh.
The engine used in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is the same engine that has been used in every Call of Duty title since, including Modern Warfare 3. Both Infinity Ward and Treyarch have built on the engine and improved it over the years, with Infinity Ward
able to run Modern Warfare 3 at 60fps, however, that has not reduced the demand from fans for a new engine.
Mark Lamia, the studio head at Treyarch, has come out and explained to gamers why a new engine would not be as beneficial or as practical as improving the current one.
He began by comparing engines to houses, "People always ask me, 'Is this a new engine?' I liken it to people who live in an older house that has been remodelled. Just because you're remodelling the house and it will look new or it will have a new kitchen,
you don't tear out the foundation, or break out some of the framing," before continuing, "Engines, each time they get touched, they change.
Lamia explained that “The answer may not need to be an entirely new engine, but you might need to do an entire overhaul of your entire lighting system.”
The studio head explained that Treyarch did everything they could to ensure that the game would run at the 60fps benchmark set by Modern Warfare 3 and all the improvements made were based around achieving that goal.
"The trick is, we're not willing to do that if we can't keep it running at 60 frames per second - but we did that this time. So this is the Black Ops II engine," said Lamia.
