The United States’ thirst for oil will be replaced by their need for China’s ‘rare elements’ as Black Ops 2 changes things up in terms of premise from previous Call of Duty games.
It turns out that the world will move on from oil and fossil fuels in the future and instead rely on ‘rare elements’ to power their everyday lives.
According to the game director, David Anthony, rare elements “are used in the production of pretty much any modern (post 2025) piece of technology.” As what that technology is, well it turns out that the 17 elements, which fall under the category, power everything from smart phones to nuclear batteries, making them immensely important.
However, the story is not as far-fetched as it may sound the one time someone hears it. The economic and political rivalry between China and the United States has hotted up in recent years with the latter owing a considerable amount of debt to the former.
At the same time, China is slowly taking over the US market, flooding it with low-quality, low price, mass produced goods that are damaging the US economy. The United States did ban Chinese imports for a time being, however, demand for goods from the mainland was too strong to uphold that ban.
It seems that the Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 writers do not trust the economic policies and capacity of the US to avoid armed conflict in the future. However, according to Anthony, the war will not be directly fought between the two nations but rather will be caused by the game’s antagonist, Raul Menendez.
Almost as if trying to prove that a US-China conflict could one day be a reality, Anthony said, "Watching the news, you see President Obama saying he's taken a case to the World Trade Organisation against China because he doesn't feel the way they handling rare earth elements isn't fair - that they're strangling American commerce. And I look at our script and it's all unfolding before our very eyes!"
