Black Sticks Men lost their second Test match against Netherlands by 2-4
The Black Sticks Men were defeated by their Dutch counter-parts in the second match of the two Test match series, played at Amstelveen, Amsterdam, Netherlands, on Tuesday, July 19.
The Kiwis’ Coach looked convinced at the performance of his athletes against the European power-house.
"It was a much improved performance today from the boys. We played with some real drive and purpose, which was good to see. However, Holland is a team that we want to be more consistent against,” Shane McLeod, the coach of the Black Sticks’ Men, stated about his team’s performance.
The Kiwis really put some daring efforts throughout the match and once they equalised the score into the start of the second half but after that the Dutch really played well and outclassed the Kiwis.
Dutch took the lead in the 14th minute of the first half, when Roger Hoftman directed the ball into the Kiwis’ net. They doubled their lead, when Taeke Taekema scored with the help of a low drag-flick. However, the Kiwis reduced the Dutch lead in the 23rd minute, when Phil Burrows, the Kiwis’ skipper, scored the opening goal for the Black Sticks as the first half ended at 1-2 to Netherlands.
The Kiwis equalised the score in the opening minutes of the second half and the scorer was Matt L’Huillier, but the Dutch were again on the top in the 46th minute, when Jerome Hertzburger scored the third Dutch goal and Valentine Varga scored the final goal of the match in the 50th minute.
“The first 15 minutes we were right on top of the Dutch with an improved press and some good midfield intercepts. This caught the Dutch out and we were able to counter on several occasions causing numerous shots on goal but unfortunately weren't able to score," Shea McAleese, the vice captain of the New Zealand’s Black Sticks Men, commented after the match.
Meanwhile, the Kiwis will return home on Friday morning to feature in the National Hockey League which is going to be started from July 30 and will conclude on August 14.
