Question:

Black and white picture using "region free" DVD player?

I just purchased a Pioneer DV-400V "region free" player to play Region 2 DVDs on my North American television (Toshiba Regza 32HL67). It was guaranteed by the ebay seller to play any dvd on any television. It plays the DVDs but the picture is in black and white. The seller is not responding to my enquiries, and google searches only turn up people are are totally satisified with the player or have the same problem without a solution. Can anyone help, please?

Thank you!

  1. First, are you using an s-video cable to hook it up? Replace the cable and see if that fixes it. If not, the unit is defective. At some place along the signal chain, you are loosing the chroma signal. An s-video cable has separate wires for chroma and luma, so if there is something wring with the cable, you can get a b/w video only. If the cable is OK, or if you are using the composite video cable (RCA jack, same as audio), then the problem is internal. This eBay seller may be dumping defective gear (or gear with a cheap s-video cable).

  2. Try changing the video settings of the dvd player to NTSC to PAL or viceversa. Check the manual of Pioneer DVD player. Most of the time we wont be cheated through ebay, I hope you are also not. Just be patient and try to do some hardwork with the manual. If still there is a problem lodge a complaint against ebay.
