  1. it can take anywhere from 2-10 years to get a black belt. you can compete in tournaments for trophys etc after about a year or so (cant say what belt because they can change a lot depending on the school)

to compete and actually make money you normally have to be a black belt.

  2. About 2 1/5 to.... whenever. It depends on how quickly you progress. It could take 2 years or even 6 years. As far as competing it probably depends on the school but in mine you have to be at least a 9th gup.

  3. You could become a black in 1.5 yrs to 2 yrs.  Just make sure you have funds available, and you could be a certified black belt quickly.  I have heard of kids in taekwondo who have received their black belts at around 4 yrs old and up.  Not just a kids class taekwondo black belt but an official black belt, that an adult would receive.  I am sure I will get yelled at for that comment, but hey its true for the most part.  Now take it there are some good schools out there, but for the most part, as long as u pay monthly and have your belt testing money, congratz, black belt here you come.  Just hope that most of these so called black belts don't ever get into a real life situation where some self defense is needed.  This I touched/patted your head, point, woohoo I am a champion stuff in my opinion won't get you anywhere in a real life situation.  Again that's just most schools, but train hard, Martial Arts is a great experience.  Have fun with your journey.

  4. I haven't trained in TKD but I've done 5 other arts, and it depends on how fast you pick up on things and how dedicated you are in training. On average, I've seen people come from white belts to black belts in about 5-8 years. It also depends on the art, some are easier to attain than others. Some have even gotten them in like 3-4 years because they're just naturally gifted. You can compete at any belt level, tournaments are mostly designed for every level of competition. But don't set a goal for a black belt, go at your own pace and you'll eventually get there. Just have fun.

  5. taekwondo takes around 3 years of training if u go to the school 2 times a week. but trust me just practising moves wont get u anywhere. u have to do some actual fighting.

  6. I got my black belt in Karate last year.

I started Karate when I was 7/8 and last year I was 14. So around 6 years.

But I don't know about Tae Kwon Do... Might be around the same?

  7. Most dojangs (Korean for dojo) turn out a black belt in around 3 years, but this varies from school to school.

Some schools allow you to compete immediately, others don't.

You didn't ask me, but spend some time watching not only the head instructor, but the students-- just because the guy has a black belt doesn't mean he knows how to teach. If his senior students look like they know what they are doing, chances are this guy can teach YOU as well.

    Good luck

  8. Taekwondo is a lot different to Karate and it takes 4 or more years as there is a lot of work to out in and a black belt grading happens only once a year! And you can compete immmediately!

  9. it depends on how hard you work. You could get your black belt in two years if you are hardworking and dedicated.

i think you can compete when you get your green belt but i'm not sure.

  10. the school im with (TAGB) it takes about 3/4 years. and you can compete  on the belt after your white. its all pretty good. either way just do it cos its so much fun and its good for ya!

  11. It takes an average of about 3 and 1/2 years. If the dojang is relatively Americanized then you can recieve a black belt in around that time. More traditional Taekwondo schools may make you wait longer. It also depends on your skill set.

I've never come across a Taekwondo competition that had a belt requiement to compete. You are usually grouped together by belt rank so its not like youll be up against black belts with 18 years of experience.

  12. How long it should take should be irrelevant. It's a question of a number of factors which will be different for every student including fitness, talent, number of hours trained each week, commitment and probably many more aspects.

If a club tells you you WILL get a black belt in a given time, I would be cautious however short or long that time may be. This would indicate they simply "give away" belts in order to attract more grading fees. If you need a black belt and are prepared to pay for one, you can save time & money by just buying one - you can get them for about a fiver almost anywhere.

    So what do I think?

Three years is too soon unless you are perhaps able to train 5 times a week.

There is no such thing as too long a time - not everyone will make it, but those who truly persevere will.

  13. Well depending on how quick you learn, you could get there in 2 years with hard work.

  14. you start competing at a white belt if u do it frequently with no breaks u could get a black belt in 2-4 years

  15. In my school there's a minimum requirement to test for a black belt. You have to be at least sixteen years old, and have been training in the school for at least four years. It takes most people about 5-6 though.

We really emphasize the 'teaching others' aspect starting at an mid-ranking to advanced ranking belts. You have to be able to really explain what the technique is and why it is done that way etc. That probably ups the minimum requirements up a little because the black belts aren't tested on form and technique alone. The teaching aspect is a large part of it.

As far as competing, we aren't involved in competitions (but they are rarely held in my area anyway). We do start sparring at yellow belt (two gups after white) though.
