Black catapillars with spikes?!?

On the road where i live, there was loads of black caterpillars with spikes. any idea what it may be?

  6. we have these everywhere here (south arkansas).

    i've always been informed to not touch them. i've known people that have stepped on them while barefooted and were in a great deal of pain.
