Question:

Black discolouration on birds feathers?

I've noticed very small areas on my 5 month old ekkie's feathers that have little black lines or patches. His feathers are in great condition apart from the ends of his tail feathers which are a bit messy due to him always rummaging on the bottom of his cage. All his feathers are developed.

his cage is clean and he has been sprayed for mites regularly. he is still too young to have the worming solution added to his water because he has not finished weaning yet.

what is causing the black discoloration? his food is rich in vitamins as his main diet is veggies and fruit. I noticed these black patches on my old ringneck too.

  1. In my humble opinion, pet birds do not need to be sprayed for mites on a regular basis.  These sprays do have chemicals in them that are not very good for your beloved pet when used too often.  Unless you are using wood shavings or taking your bird outdoors, the chance of it getting mites is very slim.  Perhaps it is a reaction to this spray.  I would consult an avian vet regarding this situation,

  2. Changes in feather color could result from stress, liver problems or nutritional deficiencies.  Since you have two birds with feather changes, my guess would be dietary problems.  But you should have your vet evaluate the birds to be certain.  There are some viruses that also damage the feathers and your vet should be consulted.

Most indoor pets do not ever encounter mites and I would certainly not be spraying your birds for them.  Please ask your vet about this and also about "worming" them.  Please do not put anything into your birds' water dishes without checking with a vet first.  Most things that are added to water make it taste nasty and hasten the growth of bacteria in the water bowl.  And PLEASE don't use the circular mite "protectors" that the pet stores sell for hanging in the cage.  They are poison.

    Good luck with your birds!
