  1. No, don't feed them feeder fish. You can feed them stuff like beefheart and blood worms. Don't put them together with small fish or it will eat them. 30 gallons is not enough. You will need at least a 75 gallon tank. It grows pretty big. Another thing is that it is more active when it's dark. So it's best to feed after turning off the lights.

One more thing, give it places to hide during the day time. And some people were able to hand feed them. Pretty cool.

Here are some good sites about the black ghost knives:

  2. 30 gallons is a little on the small side, once he gets older, think about upgrading t0o a 50 or larger. Feeder goldfish are different from rosy red minnows, somtimes rosy reds are sold as feeders, but they are different species that feeder goldfish. Feeder goldfish really do carry lots of disease and should ot be fed to other fish unless they have been quarentined for a few weeks to ensure they are healthy. It is best to base his diet on frozen vloodworms, brineshrimp and mysis shrimp. If you can, buy the ones enhanced with vitamins.

  3. 30 gallons is too small for the BGK, you need more like at least a 65 gallon, these fish grow quite big, usually around 12" in captivity, in the wild they can get to around 20"!

Goldfish are rotten feeder animals, they're the equivalent of a McDonalds cheeseburger. Store-bought feeder fish are often riddled with disease and are best avoided at all costs. Rosy Reds are not goldfish, but still are not very good nutrition wise.

In captivity it's best to be fed on foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworm while small, moving up to shrimp and earthworms as it grows.
