Question:

Black haircare question (kids)?

I have a 3 1/2 y.o. biracial daughter. She's got fine curls that are driving me crazy. I've heard that you're only supposed to comb it out when it's wet. Well by the time it dries in the morning it's all over the place so to style it, I have to comb or brush it. She hates to have it combed. I'm about to go to the barber and get it chopped off! Any ideas?

  1. First off you should try to stick with only one brand when it comes to haircare products because switching out can actually cause more damage to a child's hair than help. And secondly if you are already using Just For Me products then try the Just For Me Kid's texturizer. Don't worry I promise this is nothing like a relaxer. The product is made especially for your daughter's type of hair and I know because my daughte is bi-racial also. She is 7 yrs old and I used the texturizer and loved it. It did not ake away from her naturalhair it just made it softer, more manageable and easier to comb thru. Her curls are still present but they look so much better and her hair texture is very soft. I love it so depending on the age of your daughter, because I probably wouldn't recommend it for a child under the age of 5 or 6 but I really love it.

  2. My 2 year old is biracial - I don't know if her hair is like your daughter's hair but she's got fine curls too.

We've got it working pretty well so this is what I'm doing. I've been through a lot of shampoos/conditioners and the one we found that works the best is called Mixed Chicks. I buy it off of amazon.com

Everything else was either too drying or too greasy. The conditioner is a leave in which works well and during the week if her hair needs a little styling or gets dry you can work a little more through there. I also have a friend with the same kind of hair as my daughters and she recommended rubbing a little (a very little) olive oil in the palm of my hands and running through her hair about 15 minutes before hair washings. I do this sometimes - just when it's looking a bit dry and I only run it through the hair, I don't rub it into her scalp because her scalp doesn't get dry. We wash once a week.

For brushing, I use a wide toothed comb on wet hair and a pick on dry hair. She has a short bob which we did because combing her hair was a nightmare - she acted like I was abusing her. I was literally chasing the child around the house with a comb while she screamed. The short bob is much more manageable and it looks adorable. It's chin length.

You're probably going to have to experiment. Biracial hair is all really different just like everyone's is :) But I definitely recommend getting it cut shorter if she hates to have it brushed. Mine is so much happier with it short and it looks better too.

Edit - If the Mixed Chicks line doesn't work (and I also second the poster above me's suggestion of dep wet look gel) look into Carol's Daughter. It was just a wee bit heavy for us but if Mixed Chicks is too light for you then Carol's Daughter might be the ticket. A lot of this stuff isn't cheap, but it lasts a while and it's worth it to get those gorgeous curls which is what you want.

  3. My sons are biracial so their hair isn't that long, but......once her hair is wet and you have combed through it pull it back in a pontail(s) or braid(s) right away. Are you using leave in conditioner or detangler?

My friends daughter is biracial and she usually keeps her daughters hair about shoulder length - well when it's dry it's shoulder length. It still gets out of control a bit, she normally has it puled back pretty tight and uses barrettes on the sides. It seems to help quite a bit. Good luck!

another edit - sorry.....do NOT straighten it! It will destroy her hair. Curls are so beautiful she should ( or at least when she's older ) feel very lucky to have such beautiful hair.  I wish my hair was like that. My older boy has curly strawberry blonde hair and my younger has looser curls that are brown. They have gorgeous curly hair :)

  4. you should buy a safty straightener it will straighten her hair if you ever need to talk contact me

  5. Try this.  Shampoo her hair only once a week.  Condition her hair every morning.  I love Organix Shampoo and Conditioner...the Shea Butter One....love, love, love it.  Check out their website and you can see which stores to buy it...I can only find the shea butter one at randalls.  Put in on there thick and leave on for several minutes.  Immediately after you rinse, apply Paul Mitchell Leave In Conditioner...I absolutely love this stuff (it can also be used as a moisturizer).  Then Comb her hair while it's WET WET with the leave in condtioner in it..actually I use a Jose Eber round brush(the bristles are kinda long and wiry) in sections...it does not break my son's hair and combs the tangles out much easier than a comb.  I usually brush the ends first and then start from the middle and brush down holding the hair in my hand.  After you have put in the leave in conditioner, put in some type of curl cream....frizz ease wind down, loreal curl cream, garnier fructis had a curl cream but they discontinued it but the frizz cream works pretty good.  Then follow up with a mousse.  I personally love, love, love Paul Mitchell Conditioning mousse.

Some of what I have mentioned is pricey, but well worth it.

I have tried soooooo many things over the years and those are my favorite.  I also love Sebastion Potion 9 and PM mousse on top of that.  Also have you tried mixed chicks.  Go to mixed chicks website and see about that.  My oldest son liked it okay but it wasn't quite thick enough, but mixed with a curl cream worked well.  Key things....condition every day, follow with leave in condtioner, curl cream, and something to hold it all in.  It seems like alot but it's really not.  Good Luck!

I feel like I have tried almost everything in every  type of hair department in every store.  And NOOOOO don't straighten it!!!  Also instead of mousse you could use gel.  I like dep "the wet look" gel which really doesn't look "wet" it just curls right up.  You'll just have to try it.  Trial and error.  I've only used the gel and mousse on my 13 year old.  It hasn't been necessary yet for the little one.... but their hairtypes are totally different.

Also when my oldest son was your daughters age, I put Johnson's baby lotion in his hair (while it is soaking wet is the key).  That's it.  And it was so nice.  It curled up and when it dried it stayed that way.  Sounds crazy but it really worked.

As far as styling I have no clue because I have boys but I sure do know how to make those curls look beautiful.  You should probably style her hair while it's still wet too.
