I have an office computer that has a black screen prompting for the system password. I know the password but I am unable to type anything into the screen, the cursor doesn't move, and it will not accept any entries. It is not the keyboard. Any ideas?

  1. 1st check the plug of the keyboard to see if it is plug all the way into the socket, the keyboard might work with the other machine, in fact it is one of the most robust peripherals in pc system, however, if the keyboard light on, it doesn't mean the keyboard is recognized by the motherboard of the pc.

To be sure the motherboard recognize the keyboard, other than a secure physical connection, during the booting procedure, it can't be interrupted, like switching over to another set of pc using a kvm switch. Then the motherboard will pass the keyboard info to the operating system that eventually control/work with the keyboard.

To test the keyboard if it is full functional, try it on another pc, or when boot, hit . (<del> key) it will get to the BIOS screen, try to tab thru the items in there using the keyboard, if it doesn't works, you can't change field.

    Hope this helps.
