Black spot on eye at border of iris and white.?

Question

My husband has a black spot in his eye, about the size of a period. It appeared 3 weeks ago at the edge of the iris and white. Seems to make his eye slightly irritated and appears to be a tad bit convex, as if a piece of dirt or grit somehow went into the eye and was grown over. No diabetes, no known injury. Obviously, I'm pushing for an eye doctor apt. Any guesses?

Sounds like a foreing object got into the eye.  He needs to have it evaluated.
