Question:

Black stuff coming out of the exhaust

when i start my old volvo and give it the gas, black stuff comes out the exhaust, its not liquid and its not leaking water. the exhaust is rusty and old, is that it? i already had a tune up, oil change and oil filter change, my spark plugs are good. could it just be nasty build up?

  1. Okay: black smoke...you need an oil change or a bad spark plugs (check them) or too much gas in carburetor. My mechanic usually just rev it out and adjust the carb.

  2. yes it sounds like a build up if you do not drive the car hard normaly if it is black smoke it is running rich our it is stuck on choke. good luck34

  3. Black smoke is oil. black powder is carbon build up. hopes this helps. the black dust could be carbon uild up in the exhaust. if the car has sat for a long tine the carbon will come loos in the exhaust and blow out the tail pipe

  4. Probably carbon build up all over your engine and exhaust system. Use a additive that burns carbon from the engine and smoke it away. You will see more black stuff when you add additives in the engine, but will soon burn off in 3-4 hours.
