Black tie wedding? What does that mean?

Does that mean strictly tuxedo or can it be suit and tie? Is it proper to ask the person that sent the invitation? I don' t think most people own a tuxedo and you would have to go through the expense of renting one.

  1. If the invitation says "Black Tie Optional" or "Black Tie Invited" then, you may wear a tuxedo or you may wear a dark suit.

However, it it just says "Black Tie," then you must wear a tuxedo or you could be violating the dress code of the event.

  2. YOu better wear a tuxedo black tie, or you'll look like men's warehouse at the wedding! Go get one, you can use it always use it again!

  3. If you don't go to social events of this kind often.. or theatre then most people wouldn't own one believe renting a tuxedo is not very expensive only if you damage it or you spill something on it they you are responsible for having it fixed and pay for that before you return it..

Most of the ‘formal’ events in America are Black Tie events.  For a black tie event, the gentleman should wear the traditional black tuxedo with a formal white shirt and a black bow tie and cummerbund.  The folds of the cummerbund should face upward.

If he is wearing a shirt that has the little pointed collar, the points should be on the outside of his tie.  If he is wearing a shirt that has a regular collar, the bow tie should be on the outside of his collar.

Recently, there have been some innovations to the traditional look of the tuxedo attire.  Bow ties and cummerbunds in various colors or patterns are often worn.  Some gentlemen prefer not to wear a tie at all but prefer to wear a black button at their necks.  These are interesting looks and acceptable for all but the most traditional occasions.

The lady who is going to accompany a gentleman to a black tie event may wear either a long or a short evening gown.   If she wears gloves, she should remove them when she sits down to eat her meal.

  4. Your right MOST PEOPLE DON'T OWN TUXEDOS.....Black tie means a fancy (so to speak) event and suit with a tie (any color) is fine! How well do you know the invitee? Wouldn't they know YOU well enough to know you don't own a tux? Good luck and ask another invited guest if you need to! Sounds fancy, have fun and Good Luck!

  5. DEFINITELY ASK. It's totally proper to ask. Black tie event usually means TUXEDO. My hubby and I went to a black tie wedding a couple years back. We asked the groom if  hubby can wear a nice black suit but he said he MUST wear a tux. So my hubby ended up buying one for a few hundred dollars (he could have rented but he decided to buy one). So when we went to the wedding most of the men were wearing tux but some (about 15%) were wearing black suits!!! Two guys were just wearing regular work suits (grayish color).

I also think it's rude for it to be mandatory black tie tux, it's expensive and not everyone can afford tuxedos!

Any how, if you don't want to take chances, wear a tux. But it's not like you'll be kicked out if you wear a black suit.
