Black vertical lines on HDTV?

I just got an LCD HDTV and when I play a movie (non-HD DVD), two vertical black lines appear. The horizontal ones are gone, but now there's two ones on the sides. How can I fix this?

IDK..I always play non-HD DVDs on my LCD TV with no problems.

Are the black lines defining the actual picture width?  

On my LCD TV (Toshiba) I can change the picture format to fit the screen size without distortion.

A non-HD movie was, by definition, shot in the old style "square" video format.  So, it won"t fill the whole screen.  You can use the "zoom" function of your set to fill the entire screen, however the video will look stretched.
