I live next to a pond, and today when i went to get our ducks, there was a black water snake that i almost stepped on. it was right next to me, and it quickly made its way to the water. i got a large stick and scared it the rest of the way, but it was very large. it has been in our yard before and was too big to fit through the holes of chicken wire. Its underside is orange and red-ish, and i was wondering what kind of snake it is. I live in CT.

  1. it might have been a ring neck snake, they are black on top and orange on the bottom, but they don't get more then a foot long, and you said it was big, so maybe is was a black racer, they get a few feet long and have a yellow, whitish belly.

it might have also been one of these snakes

    Black Swamp Snake

    Black Rat Snake

    Eastern Mud Snake

    Black Pine Snake

    Eastern Indigo Snake

    Southern Black Racer

    Ring-necked snake

THE LAST TWO ARE WHAT I WAS TALKING ABOUT

all of these types of snakes are found mostly in the east, which is where we both live (i live in FL) and i see these snakes all over my yard.  i own snakes and love them.

DON'T WORRY NONE OF THOSE SNAKES ARE VENOMUS SO THEY CAN'T HURT YOU
