Blackberry Pearl appends (+) sign to be start of numbers?

Question

basically my blackberry from day one has always appended a (+) sign to the beginning of numbers that are in my contacts. as in if i look at the number in the contact area it has just the number, but if i click on the green phone to call the number it adds a (+) sign to the beginning of the number whilst dialing and then says it cant connect. The only way i can dial the number is if i remember it and manually dial it in. please help!!!

Press the green button to get to the phone menu.



once there, go to Options, then Smart Dialing.

The first option is "Country Code". Change it to unknown if you dont want to use it.

Example, mine says +1 and puts a +1 in front of my numbers for USA.
